What
is
guttate
psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a very common and chronic skin
disease. Typically, red
patches with silvery scales are formed. These
lesions may be itchy or
painful.
Guttate
psoriasis is a less common type of
psoriasis that is marked by
numerous small coin-shaped or drop-shaped lesions.
The sores may arise
all over the skin and are covered with a scales
that are much smaller
and thinner than in other types of psoriasis.
Young
patients
Guttate psoriasis affects mainly men and women
younger than 35. In most
cases the eruption is triggered bij a bacterial
infection of the throat
(Streptococcus
sp.).
Treatment
There are several treatment options for psoriasis
in general. Guttate
psoriasis usually presents with hundreds of small
lesions that are
difficult to treat individually with creams or
ointment. Therefore,
phototherapy is often recommended as the treatment
of choice. Guttate
psoriasis tends to react very well and relatively
quick to phototherapy
(such as narrowband UVB therapy).
Guttate psoriasis can occur as a single event, but
repeated outbreaks
are not rare, especially in individuals with
recurrent infections of
the upper airways.
